A516 Grade 70 Plates

A516 Gr70 maintains impact energy ≥20J at -45°C. At -30°C, its impact absorption energy remains no less than 34J, significantly reducing the risk of low-temperature brittle fracture. In contrast, the equivalent GB standard Q345R has an applicable temperature range of only -20°C to +475°C, exhibiting inferior low-temperature toughness. Even the similarly low-temperature-oriented 16MnDR plate has a minimum service temperature of -40°C and exhibits inferior stability and consistency in low-temperature impact performance compared to A516 Gr70. This advantage enables its application in low-temperature pressure vessels such as LNG storage tanks and liquefied gas storage tanks in cold regions.

Designed with a low carbon equivalent (maximum carbon content ≤0.31%), this steel significantly reduces weld crack sensitivity. It supports multiple welding processes including MIG, TIG, and submerged arc welding, requiring only ≥10°C preheating-far lower than standards for some low-alloy or heat-resistant steels. Heat-resistant steels like SA387, containing higher alloy elements, require not only higher preheating temperatures during welding but also complex post-weld stress relief treatments. While the Chinese national standard Q345R is weldable, its weld quality stability and tolerance for defects are inferior to A516 Gr70 in thick plate welding or complex structural applications.

As a carbon steel plate, A516Gr70 benefits from mature production processes and a well-established supply chain, resulting in significantly lower costs compared to low-alloy and high-alloy pressure vessel steels. When compared to SA537CL1-both suitable for medium-pressure applications-A516Gr70 eliminates the need for complex heat treatment strengthening processes, thereby reducing production expenses. The cost advantage becomes even more pronounced when compared to stainless steel or Cr-Mo alloy plates (e.g., SA387). Simultaneously, its strength surpasses that of ordinary carbon steel Q245R, enabling an optimal balance between strength and cost in medium-to-low pressure vessels. This makes it the ideal choice for medium-to-low pressure applications.
