Products Description
What is ASTM A516 Gr70?
ASTM A516 is a standard issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials. It specifies the requirements for carbon steel plates used in low- to medium-temperature pressure vessels. These plates are primarily used for the fabrication of pressure vessels and for improving notch toughness. They are available in four strength grades: 55, 60, 65, and 70. A516 Grade 70 is the highest strength grade specified in the ASTM A516 standard. This pressure vessel steel plate is high-strength, high-toughness, and weldable, normalized, and has passed rigorous non-destructive testing.

Product Details
- Mechanical properties: Tensile strength: 485–620 MPa. At an impact temperature of -30°C, elongation is ≥21%, and hardness is ≤200.
- Maximum Temperature: The applicable temperature range is typically -30°C to +425°C. Within this temperature range, A516 Gr70 steel plates can maintain their mechanical properties well, meeting the requirements for pressure vessel applications.
- Yield Strength: Yield strength is 260 MPa. At stress levels below this value, the material undergoes elastic deformation; exceeding this value may result in plastic deformation.
- Delivery condition: Steel plates with a thickness of up to 40 mm are typically supplied in the as-rolled condition, though they may also be supplied in the normalized or stress-relieved condition. Steel plates with a thickness exceeding 40 mm are supplied after normalization treatment.
Features of A516 Gr70 Pressure Vessel Steel Plate
High Strength
A516Gr70 has a yield strength of ≥260 MPa and a tensile strength ranging from 485 to 620 MPa, enabling it to withstand high-pressure loads during the operation of pressure vessels. It is suitable for manufacturing equipment that must withstand high pressures.
High Toughness
A516Gr70 steel plates exhibit excellent low-temperature toughness, capable of withstanding temperatures below -46°C without exhibiting brittle fracture.
Good weldability
During the production of A516Gr70 steel plates, the content of elements such as carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus is strictly controlled. Therefore, during welding, defects such as cracks and porosity are unlikely to occur. The welded joints also have high strength and toughness, and can be processed using various welding techniques such as arc welding and submerged arc welding.
Easy to form
This product has good cold bending and rolling processing performance. You can use cold or hot processing to make various shaped parts, which can be used to manufacture complex-shaped pressure vessel components.
Performance Differences Between A516Gr70 and A516Gr60
1. Chemical Composition
The primary distinction between A516 Grade 70 and A516 Grade 60 lies in their carbon content, which directly influences strength and processing characteristics.
A516 Grade 70
- Thickness ≤ 12.5 mm: Max. C = 0.27%
- Thickness > 12.5 mm: Max. C = 0.30%
Higher carbon content contributes to increased tensile strength but can slightly reduce ductility and weldability.
A516 Grade 60
- Thickness ≤ 12.5 mm: Max. C = 0.21%
- 12.5 mm < Thickness ≤ 50 mm: Max. C = 0.23%
- 50 mm < Thickness ≤ 63 mm: Max. C = 0.25%
Lower carbon content offers better weldability and formability, with slightly lower strength.
2. Mechanical Properties
| Comparison Dimensions | A516Gr70 | A516Gr60 |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (MPa) | 485–620 | 485–620 |
| Yield Strength (MPa)
|
≥260 | ≥220 |
| Elongation (%) at 50 mm
|
≥21 | ≥25 |
Strength
A516 Grade 70 offers higher tensile and yield strength, making it suitable for demanding structural and pressure requirements.
Ductility
A516 Grade 60 provides better elongation, enhancing performance in applications where deformation resistance is critical.
3. Processing Characteristics
A516Gr70
Higher strength can make certain cold forming operations more challenging. Careful control of bending radius and forming temperature is recommended to prevent cracking.
A516Gr60
Lower alloy content translates to superior weldability and machinability, making it easier to process and form into complex shapes without compromising material integrity.
Advantages of A516Gr70
Excellent corrosion resistance
A516Gr70 steel plates feature a fine-grained microstructure and a uniform chemical composition, enabling them to withstand corrosion from corrosive media such as hydrogen sulfide. They are suitable for use in industries such as petroleum and chemicals, helping reduce the frequency of equipment maintenance and extending service life.
Strong temperature adaptability
A516Gr70 steel plates are primarily used in low- to moderate-temperature environments, with a typical operating temperature range from −46 °C to moderate temperatures. Within this range, the material's strength and toughness remain stable, meeting the long-term usage requirements of pressure vessels in such conditions.
High surface quality
A516Gr70 steel plates have good dimensional tolerance control and high surface quality. This provides a solid foundation for subsequent fabrication and application, and ensures the overall quality and performance of the equipment.
Good economic performance
While meeting performance requirements, they help reduce production costs and provide excellent economic value compared to some high-performance alloy steels.
