What is CCS shipbuilding steel?

CCS shipbuilding steel refers to a specific category of hot-rolled steel products-such as plates, sheets, and sections-that are manufactured according to the rigorous standards set by the China Classification Society (CCS) for use in hull structures . It is essentially steel that has been approved by CCS for shipbuilding.

To be designated as CCS steel, the material must comply with the requirements detailed in the CCS rules, primarily the "Rules for Materials and Welding" and the "Rules for Steel Ships" . These specifications govern everything from chemical composition and mechanical properties to testing and inspection procedures. It's a "guarantee" of quality and safety for marine applications.

Key Classification of CCS Shipbuilding Steel

Category Strength Level Quality Grades Typical Yield Strength (MPa) Typical Tensile Strength (MPa)
General Strength Steel 235 MPa A, B, D, E ≥ 235 400 - 520
High Strength Steel 315 MPa A32, D32, E32, F32 ≥ 315 440 - 570
  355 MPa A36, D36, E36, F36 ≥ 355 490 - 630
  390 MPa A40, D40, E40, F40 ≥ 390 510 - 660

General Strength Steel: With a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa, this steel is further divided into four quality grades-A, B, D, and E. The key difference between these grades is their impact toughness at low temperatures. For instance, 'A' grade is tested at 0°C, while 'E' grade must maintain toughness at -40°C, making it suitable for vessels operating in colder climates .

High Strength Steel: This category offers higher yield strengths (e.g., 315, 355, 390 MPa) for building larger and more advanced ships, allowing for lighter structures. The grades-such as A32, D36, or F40-combine a strength level (the number) with a toughness grade (the letter), which again indicates the temperature at which it retains impact resistance (A: 0°C, D: -20°C, E: -40°C, F: -60°C) .

How to Identify CCS Steel

The official certificate accompanying the steel will bear the CCS approval stamp and the signature of a CCS surveyor. It will also explicitly state the CCS grade (e.g., CCS-A, CCS-D32).

Physical Markings on the Steel

The steel itself will be marked with:

The CCS approval mark.

Paint-framed or stenciled information including the steel grade, dimensions, and heat/batch number.

Inquiring about the export qualifications of the intended company, as well as whether it has long-term cooperative clients, especially regarding the CCS ship plates project.

why choose us?

We promise to provide genuine and verifiable factory certification certificates from the China Classification Society (CCS  steel) and product inspection certificates along with the goods. This is a crucial requirement for the shipyard's warehouse acceptance process.

Common specifications (CCS  6-40mm) are in ample supply and can be cut to any length as per customer requirements. This feature helps shipyards reduce waste from leftover materials and lower procurement costs.

Based on the size of the order and the history of cooperation, we can offer competitive payment terms to help the shipyard optimize its cash flow.

FAQ

CCS A ship steel plate

01.How are the names of the ship plates determined? For example, what does CCS A mean?

CCS: Indicates that the certification body is the China Classification Society.
A: Indicates that the strength level is of general strength. The general strength steel plates are divided into four grades: A, B, D, and E. The main difference lies in the test temperature for impact toughness (grade A at 0°C, grade B at 20°C, grade D at -20°C, and grade E at -40°C).

02.When purchasing the ship plates, what documents can you provide?

The classification society certification certificate, usually referred to as the Mill Certificate or the EN 10204 3.2 certificate.
The certificate must bear the official seal of the classification society and the signature of the surveyor.
Traceability: The furnace number and batch number on the certificate must be consistent with the physical markings on the steel plate.
Data: It must include actual measured data such as chemical composition, mechanical properties (yield, tensile strength, impact value), etc.

03.What is the minimum order quantity?

We support flexible order quantities. For ready-made products, an order of 5 tons is required; for custom rolled products, an order of 20 tons (one furnace batch) is usually necessary. New customers can place a trial order first.

04.Can you provide cutting and processing services?

OK. We offer pre-processing services such as CNC cutting, beveling, and drilling. We will process according to your drawings. Once the materials arrive at the factory, they can be assembled and welded directly, helping you shorten the shipbuilding cycle.
