M42 steel is high cobalt toughness high-speed steel, the mass fraction of vanadium in M42 steel is not high (about 1%), the mass fraction of cobalt is high (about 8%), cobalt can promote carbide in the quenching heating more dissolved in the matrix, the use of high matrix hardness to improve wear resistance. The hardness, thermal hardness, wear resistance and grindability of the steel are very good.

Heat treatment process specification and performance
Heat treatment process specification: quenching, 730 ~ 845℃ preheating, 1190 ~ 1210℃ (salt bath furnace) or 1200 ~ 1220℃ (box furnace) heating, oil cooling, 540 ~ 560℃ tempering twice, each 2h.
Mechanical properties: annealing hardness ≤269HBW, cold drawing annealing hardness ≤277HBW, cold drawing hardness ≤285HBW.
Heat treatment hardness can reach 67-70HRC, but there are also special heat treatment methods to obtain a hardness of 67-68HRC, so that its cutting performance (especially intermittent cutting) is improved, improve the impact toughness. The steel can be made into a variety of tools, cutting difficult to process materials when the effect is very good, with the steel manufacturing cutting tools, can cut iron based superalloy, cast superalloy, titanium alloy and ultra-high strength steel, but the toughness is slightly poor, quenching temperature using the lower limit. Because the steel has good grinding performance, it can be made into various high-precision complex tools.
