What precautions should be taken when welding A516 Gr70 steel plates during boiler manufacturing?
Pre-welding preparation
- The mechanical properties of the welding materials must match those of A516 Gr70, particularly strength and impact toughness. For example: welding rods, welding wires, and flux
- Low-hydrogen electrodes must be dried at 350-400°C for 1-2 hours and stored in an insulated container at 80-100°C to prevent moisture absorption. Moisture absorption can cause porosity in the weld and hydrogen embrittlement. Welding wire must be cleaned of oil and rust. Welding flux must be dried to remove moisture.
- Workers must select the appropriate groove type based on the thickness of the plate to ensure full penetration and prevent incomplete fusion defects.
- The groove and the 20 mm area on either side must be ground to expose the metal surface, removing rust, oil, and scale to prevent porosity or inclusions during welding.
- Workers must hold valid certifications and be familiar with the welding characteristics of low-alloy steel to avoid defects caused by improper operation.
Welding Process
- Welding can be performed using short-arc welding to reduce arc deflection and prevent porosity. When performing multi-layer, multi-pass welding, each weld bead must be cleaned of slag, inspected for defects, and then the next layer can be welded.
- When extinguishing the arc, the arc pit must be filled to prevent arc pit cracks. For long welds, methods such as segmented back welding or skip welding should be used to minimize welding deformation and stress.
- The welding environment must be protected from wind, rain, and humidity.
Post-welding Treatment
- For thick plates or structures with high rigidity, hydrogen removal treatment should be performed immediately after welding.
- Heat treatment can reduce residual welding stress, improve weld toughness, and prevent stress corrosion cracking. This is particularly important for pressure vessels such as boilers.
- After welding, remove weld slag and spatter, and perform a visual inspection of the weld. The weld should be free of defects such as cracks, porosity, inclusions, or incomplete penetration.
- Critical welds must undergo non-destructive testing to ensure internal quality compliance.
