CCS EH40 Shipbuilding Steel Plate – High-Strength Marine Steel for Arctic and Extreme Cold Environments
CCS EH40 is a higher-strength hull structural steel certified by the China Classification Society (CCS). The "E" in the grade designation indicates impact testing at -40°C, which distinguishes it from AH40 (0°C) and DH40 (-20°C). "H" denotes higher-strength steel, and "40" refers to the minimum yield strength of 40 kgf/mm² (approximately 390 MPa).
EH40 is produced using killed steel practices with fine grain treatment and microalloying elements such as niobium, vanadium, and titanium to achieve the required mechanical properties. The steel is primarily supplied in normalized (N) or TMCP (Thermo-Mechanical Controlled Processing) condition.
CCS EH40 is designed for ship hull structures operating in Arctic and polar regions where temperatures can drop below -40°C. The material offers the same 390 MPa yield strength as AH40 and DH40 but with reliable impact toughness at significantly lower temperatures. According to CCS requirements, EH40 plates must pass Charpy V-notch impact testing at -40°C with minimum average energy of 41 J for longitudinal specimens and 27 J for transverse specimens on plates up to 50mm thickness.

FAQ

01.What does "EH40" stand for in shipbuilding steel?
The "E" indicates impact testing at -40°C. "H" stands for higher-strength steel. "40" refers to the minimum yield strength of 40 kgf/mm², approximately 390 MPa in metric units.
02.What is the difference between EH40 and DH40?
03.What heat treatment is required for CCS EH40 plates?
04.What preheating is required for welding CCS EH40?
EH40 has a higher carbon equivalent than normal-strength grades. For thicknesses under 25mm, preheat around 75–100°C is typical. For thicker sections (above 40mm), preheat in the 100–150°C range is common. Low-hydrogen welding consumables are required. Always follow an approved welding procedure specification with controlled heat input.
