Products Description
A516 Gr70 can be used for manufacturing medium and low-pressure boilers. Such boilers place strict requirements on the steel, particularly regarding toughness at ambient and low temperatures, weldability, and adequate strength. A516 Gr70 meets these requirements effectively.
- Qualified Toughness: After normalizing treatment, A516 Gr70 steel plate provides excellent impact toughness at both ambient and low temperatures. This property helps prevent stress cracking caused by temperature fluctuations during boiler start-up and shutdown.
- Good Weldability: As a low-carbon steel, its carbon content is low, reducing the risk of forming hardened microstructures during welding. This ensures stable performance at welded joints, which is critical since boiler pressure components involve extensive welding.
- Adequate Strength: With a yield strength of ≥260 MPa and a tensile strength of 485–620 MPa, A516 Gr70 is capable of withstanding the operating pressures of medium and low-pressure boilers.

Why Does A516 Gr70 Steel Plate For Boiler Have Excellent Weldability?
1. Low Carbon Content Reduces Welding Crack Risks
Strictly Controlled Carbon Content: A516 Gr70 maintains a low carbon level of 0.28%–0.31%, which is the core reason for its superior weldability.
- Prevention of Cold Cracks: During welding, low-carbon steel is less likely to form brittle martensitic structures in the weld and heat-affected zone (HAZ), reducing the risk of cracking after cooling.
- Reduced Hot Cracking: The combination of low carbon with low sulfur and phosphorus minimizes hot shortness, lowering the tendency for hot cracks during high-temperature welding.
2. Stable Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) Properties
- Low HAZ Hardness: Compared with high-carbon steels or high-strength low-alloy steels, A516 Gr70 shows minimal hardness increase in the HAZ, retaining good toughness and reducing the risk of brittle fracture.
- Normalized for Toughness: Supplied in the normalized condition, the steel has a uniform microstructure. This controls grain growth in the HAZ during welding, maintaining high toughness retention.
3. Strong Adaptability to Welding Processes
- Compatible with Common Methods: Suitable for SMAW, SAW, GMAW/MIG, and GTAW/TIG processes.
- Simple Pre-Treatment: In most cases, no preheating or only low-temperature preheating is required. Post-weld stress relief is typically unnecessary, which significantly reduces welding costs and time.
4. Good Weld Metal–Base Metal Compatibility
- Strength Matching: Using standard low-carbon or low-alloy welding consumables, the weld metal can easily match the yield and tensile strength of the base metal, preventing weak joints.
- Low-Temperature Toughness: Even at –46 °C, the impact energy of both the weld and HAZ meets standard requirements, aligning with the toughness of the base metal. This makes A516 Gr70 highly reliable for pressure equipment operating in low-temperature environments.
Advantages of A516 Gr70 over Other Steels in Boiler Manufacturing
Superior Toughness
A516 Gr70 provides excellent impact toughness at ambient and low temperatures, reducing the risk of cracking during boiler start-up and shutdown. Many alternative steels cannot match this level of low-temperature performance.
Excellent Weldability
With low carbon content (≈0.28%–0.31%) and controlled levels of sulfur and phosphorus, A516 Gr70 offers stable welding joints and minimal risk of cold or hot cracking. This makes it easier to fabricate than higher-carbon or alloyed steels.
Adequate Strength for Medium and Low-Pressure Boilers
Yield strength ≥260 MPa and tensile strength 485–620 MPa ensure it can safely handle operating pressures. Compared with mild steels, A516 Gr70 provides a better strength-to-weight balance.
Normalized Condition Ensures Uniform Microstructure
Supplied in the normalized state, it has consistent mechanical properties and stable performance across the base metal and heat-affected zones, unlike some steels that require additional treatments.
Cost-Effective and Widely Available
As a standard ASTM material, A516 Gr70 is widely produced and easy to source globally, often at a lower cost than alloy steels with similar performance.
