How to Choose the Right Grade
CCS Grade A: Suitable for general structural components in non-critical areas where low-temperature impact performance is not required.
CCS Grade B: Recommended for hull structures operating in moderate climates where basic impact toughness at 0°C is acceptable.
CCS Grade D: The preferred choice for vessels navigating cold ocean waters where the operating temperature can drop to -20°C. Features killed and fine-grained steel for superior low-temperature performance.
CCS Grade E: Designed for the harshest conditions, including Arctic and polar waters, with impact testing at -40°C and stricter chemical composition limits.

User Evaluation
"We ordered 850 tons of CCS Grade D plates for a new fishing trawler operating in the Barents Sea. The impact test results at -20°C were flawless, and the weldability was outstanding even in cold shop conditions. Delivery was ahead of schedule. Highly recommended.

FAQ

01.What is the difference between CCS Grade D and Grade A shipbuilding steel?
The primary difference is the impact test temperature. Grade A does not require impact testing (tested at +20°C), while Grade D is impact tested at -20°C with a minimum energy absorption of 27 Joules. Grade D also requires killed steel and fine grain treatment for better low-temperature performance, making it suitable for cold ocean waters where Grade A would be unsafe.
02.Can CCS Grade D be welded without preheating?
03.What heat treatment condition should I choose for CCS Grade D plates?
It depends on your thickness and application:
As-rolled (AR): Suitable for thicknesses up to 35mm in general structures.
Normalized (N): Recommended for thicknesses above 40mm to refine grain structure and ensure uniform mechanical properties.
TMCP: Preferred for heavy plates (over 60mm) requiring high toughness and excellent weldability.
We can advise based on your specific design requirements.
04.Do you provide third-party inspection and certification?
Absolutely. We offer full third-party inspection services by SGS, TUV, or BV, and all plates come with mill test certificates under EN 10204 Type 3.1 as standard. Type 3.2 certification is also available upon request, witnessed by your nominated classification society (ABS, LR, DNV, etc.). We can also arrange ultrasonic testing (UT) and Z-direction tests as needed.
