CCS Grade B shipbuilding steel plate is a normal-strength structural steel certified by the China Classification Society (CCS). It is one of four quality grades in the general strength shipbuilding steel family (A, B, D, E), with impact testing conducted at 0°C .CCS Grade B is primarily used in the construction of ship hulls, superstructures, and marine engineering structures for vessels operating in moderate climate conditions.As with other general strength grades, the minimum yield strength is 235 MPa, and the tensile strength ranges from 400 to 520 MPa.The main distinction between CCS Grade A, B, D, and E lies in their low-temperature impact toughness requirements and chemical composition controls.

Grade Selection Guide

Grade A: General structural components, non-critical areas. Impact testing not required (tested at +20°C) .

Grade B: Coastal vessels, bulk carriers, and moderate climate operations where impact toughness at 0°C is sufficient. Requires higher manganese content (≥0.80%) than Grade A and D for improved strength.

Grade D: Ocean-going vessels operating in cold waters down to -20°C. Killed and fine-grained steel with aluminum treatment.

Grade E: Arctic and polar region vessels with -40°C impact requirements and the tightest composition controls.

Impact Testing: Charpy V-notch at 0°C .

01.What is the difference between CCS Grade A and Grade B shipbuilding steel?

Grade B requires impact testing at 0°C with a minimum of 27 Joules, while Grade A does not have an impact test requirement (only expected at +20°C). Grade B also has a higher minimum manganese content (0.80% vs 0.50%) and a lower maximum silicon content (0.35% vs 0.50%) . Grade B is better suited for structures requiring reliable impact toughness at moderate temperatures.

02.Is preheating required for welding CCS Grade B plates?

For thicknesses under 30mm, preheating is generally not required under normal shop conditions. For thicker sections (above 40mm) or when welding in low ambient temperatures, a preheat of 50–100°C is recommended. CCS Grade B has good weldability due to its low carbon equivalent, but always follow an approved welding procedure specification (WPS).

03.What heat treatment condition should I choose?

t ≤ 50mm: As-rolled (AR) or controlled-rolled (CR) is suitable for most applications.

t > 50mm: Normalized (N) or TMCP is required by classification rules to ensure consistent mechanical properties through the full thickness.

04.Can CCS Grade B be used for ocean-going vessels?

Yes, but with limitations. CCS Grade B is impact tested at 0°C, making it suitable for vessels operating in temperate and coastal waters. For vessels navigating cold ocean waters where temperatures drop below 0°C, CCS Grade D (-20°C) or Grade E (-40°C) would be the appropriate choice.
