EH32 Marine Steel Plate – High-Strength Low-Alloy Steel for Demanding Marine Environments
EH32 is a high-strength, low-alloy shipbuilding steel officially designated under ASTM A131 and ABS standards. It is specifically engineered for the construction of ocean-going vessels, offshore drilling rigs, and large container ships operating in polar or extreme cold regions.
Unlike standard structural steel, EH32 is characterized by its exceptional low-temperature toughness at -40°C. It is a required material for shipyards and repair facilities that demand guaranteed performance in harsh environments.
Key Standards: ABS, BV, CCS, DNV-GL, LR, NK, RINA
Grade: EH32 (E Grade High Tensile Steel)
Thickness Range: 6mm – 150mm (customized per project)
Width: Up to 4500mm

Why Choose EH32 Over Lower Grades?
One-stop steel procurement

A Grade Steel: Suitable for general internal structures (0°C impact test).

D Grade Steel: Standard for hulls in temperate waters (-20°C impact test).

E Grade Steel (EH32): Mandatory for the main strength deck, sheer strake, and bottom plating of vessels over 100 meters in length operating in cold regions.

FAQ

01.Can I use EH32 steel plate as a direct replacement for AH32 or DH32?
Technically yes, but economically no.
All three grades share the same minimum yield strength (315 MPa). However, EH32 undergoes impact testing at -40°C, while AH32 is tested at 0°C and DH32 at -20°C.
Upgrading (AH32 → EH32): Safe, but you overpay for unnecessary low-temperature toughness if your vessel never sails in Arctic waters.
Downgrading (EH32 → AH32): Strictly prohibited by classification societies (ABS, DNV, LR) for hull components operating in cold regions.
Recommendation: Always follow the ship design specification. If you need help deciding between AH32 vs DH32 vs EH32, [contact our technical team] for a free material selection review.
02.What certifications are required for EH32 shipbuilding steel plates?
Every EH32 plate must be accompanied by a 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204, verified by an independent classification society. We provide:
ABS, DNV, LR, BV, CCS, NK, RINA approval stamps
Full chemical ladle analysis (C, Mn, Si, Nb, V, etc.)
Charpy V-Notch impact values at -40°C (minimum 31J average)
Ultrasonic testing (UT) according to ASTM A578 or EN 10160 upon request.
03.Is welding EH32 more difficult than welding AH32 or DH32?
Not with the correct procedure. EH32 contains grain-refining elements (Nb, V) and a lower carbon equivalent (Ceq ≤ 0.38%), which actually improves weldability compared to older high-strength steels. However, three precautions are essential:
| Parameter | Requirement for EH32 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Preheat temperature | 50–100°C (minimum) | Prevents hydrogen-induced cold cracking |
| Heat input | ≤ 5.0 kJ/mm | Preserves -40°C impact toughness in HAZ |
| Consumables | Low-hydrogen electrodes (E7016-E) | Matches strength and low-temperature ductility |
For AH32 (0°C service), preheating is often optional. For DH32 (-20°C service), moderate control is needed. For EH32, strict adherence to a qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is mandatory.
04.Why is EH32 more expensive than AH32 and DH32?
The price hierarchy reflects alloying cost and quality control rigor:
AH32 (lowest price): Basic grain refinement, impact tested at 0°C only. Suitable for internal structures and mild climates.
DH32 (mid price): Requires fine grain practice and -20°C impact testing. Additional deoxidation adds cost.
EH32 (highest price):
Chemistry: Tighter niobium (Nb) and vanadium (V) ranges for -40°C performance
Rolling: TMCP or normalizing required, not as-rolled
Testing: Every plate lot undergoes -40°C Charpy testing (more expensive than 0°C or -20°C)
Inspection: Often requires third-party surveyor witnessing
Typical premium: EH32 costs roughly 12–18% more than DH32 and 25–30% more than AH32. However, using a lower grade in an Arctic environment risks catastrophic brittle fracture – a cost far exceeding any material savings.
